Overview


The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program compliments the Laboratory’s mission in its endeavor to create a safe and welcoming workplace and community environment by supporting those employees, visitors, users, students, and immediate family members who would like to improve their English skills by providing English language classes that suit their curricular needs along with supplementary cross-cultural educational programs that enhance communication among our diverse population.

Course Structure

  • 6 months (Full time and Part time)

The English for Speakers of Other Languages course is the part of the University of Cambridge that provides qualifications for learners of English.  It is administered and conducted by the British Council.    This is a full time course especially designed for foreign students.  The following information provides an outline of the four skills covered in FCE.

Note: Application closes 1 month before the course commencement date for international students and 1 week for local students.

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE):

Course contents:

The main aim of this course is to develop and practise the language and skills that students’ need to communicate and be part of a global world.

Listening:

This module focuses on understanding, comprehending and responding to dialogues, learning the right pronunciation through study of phonics and be able to carry out instructions.

Reading:

Students on completion of this module will be able to read with correct pronunciation through the study of phonics, read a variety of texts and demonstrate an understanding of the structure of English.

Writing:

Students’ learn the use of grammar, vocabulary, give information and instructions and be able to produce variations in sentence structure.

Speaking:

The module aims to prepare students to face the world and develop communication skills which will help them in their everyday activities. They learn English speaking skills through class activities, role plays, discussion, interacting with fellow students, describing objects and having structured conversations in class
